A soft, muddy driveway that turns into a mess after every rainstorm is one of those problems that just gets worse if you ignore it. That's exactly what we were dealing with here in Comstock, NY - an existing driveway that needed a proper stone install to firm things up and get water moving the right way.
Here's how we approached it. Before a single load of stone goes down, the prep work has to be right. We laid landscape fabric across the full width of the driveway first. That layer is doing a lot of quiet work underneath - it separates the stone from the soil below, keeps the two from mixing over time, and helps the surface stay stable instead of slowly sinking back into the ground.
Then comes the stone. We had a large pile of crushed stone staged and ready to spread. Once it's distributed and graded across the surface, you get that clean, even coverage that actually holds up - not just after the job is done, but through repeated rain events and heavy use. That's the difference between throwing stone down and actually installing it correctly.
We're about halfway through at this point and it's already looking like a completely different driveway. The stone is spreading evenly, the surface is firming up, and the drainage issue this homeowner was dealing with is getting solved from the ground up. Stay tuned - we'll have the finished result posted soon.
If your driveway turns soft after rain or has spots that never seem to dry out, the fix usually isn't as complicated as you think. It's mostly about doing the prep right and using the correct material. That's what we focus on every time.
