When a new concrete slab goes in, the surrounding yard usually takes a beating. That's exactly what we were dealing with here in Fort Edward. The area next to the fresh slab was left with raw, sandy fill - nothing that grass could ever take hold in on its own.

Here's what the work actually involved: 20 tons of backfill to build the grade back up, followed by 9 tons of rich topsoil spread across the entire area. That's not a small job. Getting the base right with proper backfill first is what prevents settling and soft spots down the road. Skipping that step and going straight to topsoil is a shortcut that causes headaches later.

The difference between sandy construction fill and quality topsoil is night and day. Sandy material drains too fast, compacts poorly, and gives grass seed almost nothing to work with. Dark, nutrient-rich topsoil holds moisture, supports root development, and gives new grass a real foundation. We graded the topsoil smooth and flush with the existing lawn line so the whole yard ties together cleanly.

This kind of work falls right in line with what we do for lawn care maintenance - making sure the ground is actually set up for a healthy lawn, not just patched over. Whether it's post-construction repair, grading, or general lawn prep, getting the soil right is always step one. Everything else depends on it.

If your yard got torn up during a construction project and you're left with bare dirt, sand, or uneven ground, this is the kind of restoration it takes to get back to a proper lawn. It's more involved than it looks, but the end result is a yard that can actually grow.
