Most people don't think much about their mulch beds until things start looking rough - weeds creeping in, bare dirt patches showing, plants looking a little lost. That's usually when a fresh layer of dark mulch makes all the difference. It's one of those jobs that sounds simple but completely changes how a property reads from the street.

Here's what we were working with at this Lake George property - multiple planting beds wrapping around a beautiful paver walkway, a stone retaining wall area near the driveway, and a variety of established plants including hostas, ornamental grasses, rhododendrons, and flowering shrubs. A lot going on, which means the mulch had to tie everything together cleanly.

We laid fresh black mulch throughout all the beds - front foundation beds, the curved beds flanking the paver path, and the beds tucked around the stone retaining wall near the rear entry. The contrast between the dark mulch and the green plantings is exactly the kind of clean, finished look that makes a well-maintained landscape stand out. Beyond the aesthetics, that fresh layer is doing real work - retaining soil moisture through summer heat and blocking weeds before they get a foothold.

What makes a job like this look right is getting the depth consistent and keeping the edges clean. Too thin and it won't suppress weeds. Too thick and it can smother the root zone. We pay attention to that, especially around established plants that don't need any extra stress. The result is beds that look intentional - not just topped off, but properly done.

This is the kind of landscaping maintenance work that punches well above its weight. The paver walkway already looks great at this property - but with the beds freshened up around it, the whole front and side of the home has a noticeably cleaner, more polished feel.
