Here's what we were working with - a beat-up backyard with patchy grass, muddy spots, and zero usable outdoor space. No real surface to set up chairs, fire up the grill, or just step outside without tracking dirt everywhere. It's one of those things homeowners deal with for years before finally pulling the trigger on a fix.

We started from scratch. The area got fully excavated and graded clean, then we laid down a proper gravel base layer followed by landscape fabric. That base work is the part nobody sees when the job is done - but it's exactly what keeps a patio from shifting, sinking, or cracking over time. Skip that step and you'll be dealing with problems in a few years.

For this 10x14 patio in Fort Edward, we went with Cambridge Ledgestone pavers in a mixed gray and brown blend. The Ledgestone profile has a natural stone look to it with a lot of color variation between pieces - grays, tans, and darker charcoal tones mixed throughout. It gives the finished surface a high-end appearance without the cost or maintenance headaches of natural stone.

One detail worth pointing out - there was an existing granite step built into the layout near the back door. Rather than demo it out, we cut the patio around it cleanly and worked it right into the design. That kind of field problem-solving is just part of doing this work the right way. Every yard has something, and you adapt.

What you end up with is a clean, level surface right off the back of the house. Solid footing, no mud, no worn-out grass - just a functional outdoor space that holds up season after season. That's what a well-built paver patio is supposed to do.
